VGTRK hit by hacking attack
The Russian state broadcaster VGTRK has been targeted by an “unprecedented” hacking attack. According to several reports, its online broadcasting and internal services went down on Monday, October 7. VGTRK operates several national TV stations including Rossiya 1 and Rossiya 24, as well as dozens of regional TV and radio services. The attack coincided with President Putin’s birthday and some sources say Ukrainian hackers were behind the attack.
SkyShowtime unveils premium plan
The streaming service SkyShowtime has introduced a new premium subscription plan across its markets in Central and Eastern Europe. Known as SkyShowtime Premium, it will be offered from October 29 alongside SkyShowtime’s two current plans, namely Standard with Ads and Standard. SkyShowtime is present in over 20 markets, 14 of which are in Central and Eastern Europe.
Prima “revolutionises” video advertising
The Czech Republic’s Prima Group has launched a new on demand audiovisual media service. Known as the Prima play video library, it allows media houses and website operators to supplement their content with a link to the Prima service. Website operators receive a 30% return from the embedded video advertisement sold by Media Club, and Prima Group also offers the possibility of monetisation to video creators. The Prima play video library currently contains more than 15,000 short and long videos from the portfolio of the Prima Group and other partners. Prima Group is a leading player in the field of online advertising and able to reach up to 7.4 million real users per month. Among the most important websites from its portfolio are the streaming service prima+ with almost 1.3 million registered users and more than 160 million played videos since the launch of the platform.
Ken Campbell to head Poland’s Play
Ken Campbell has been appointed the CEO of iliad’s Polish operation Play, effective November 10. He will take over from Jean Marc Harion, who joined Play in 2018 and will take on another position in iliad. Campbell has over 25 years of experience in the telecom industry and previously worked in North America, Africa and Europe, most recently at PMP Strategy in London. Play took over Liberty Global’s UPC Polska in 2012.
Tivio Studio expands across CEE
Czech Republic-based Tivio Studio is expanding its operations into Poland and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). At the same time, it has appointed Lukasz Wysocki as the new VP of partnerships for the region. Tivio Studio specialises in content creation and broadcasting solutions. Its solutions include TV channels, a cutting-edge Ads Management system and Tivio Play for subscription and revenue sharing.
TVP grows streaming audience
The Polish public broadcaster’s TVP VOD service was visited by over 2.4 million users and its average viewing time was almost 3 hours and 40 minutes in September. As a result, according to the Mediapanel PBI study, it gained an 8.13% share of total VOD and OTT usage time, overtaking services such as Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and Canal+ Online and taking second place behind Netflix. Meanwhile, the number of users of the tvp.info portal in September was 22% up year-on-year in September.
A1 Serbia opts for Agama
Sweden’s Agama Technologies has been chosen by A1 Serbia for its head-end assurance and analytics. A1 Serbia will use Agama’s solution to gain real-time insights into the video service XploreTV delivered to its customers. XploreTV offers subscribers 80 TV channels, while an additional package (Xplore TV Sport) consists of 45 TV channels, 18 of which are sports.
Emitel hires Urszula Marzec
The Polish national transmission company Emitel has appointed Urszula Marzec its broadcast and multimedia product manager. Marzec has previously held key managerial positions at – amongst others – The Polish public broadcaster TVP, SES Satellites, Modern Times Group (MTG) and Canal+ Cyfrowy.
